Home Battery Backup Installation in Cincinnati
A home battery keeps your most important circuits running when the power goes out, with no fuel, no noise and no one needing to be home to switch it on. EKS Electric designs and installs home battery backup systems for homeowners across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. We help you decide what to back up, size the system to match, and install it to code with permits and inspection handled.

What a Home Battery Can Do
- Automatic outage backup: the system detects a grid outage and switches your backed-up circuits to battery power.
- Store solar energy: charge from your solar panels and use that energy at night or during an outage.
- Pair with other backup: work alongside a compatible EV (see Tesla Powershare) or, in some designs, a generator.
Critical Loads or Whole-Home Backup?
The biggest design decision is what the battery will power.
Critical-loads backup
Selected circuits, such as the refrigerator, sump pump, lights, internet, furnace blower, and medical equipment, are moved to a dedicated backup panel. This approach stretches the battery's runtime and usually costs less.
Whole-home backup
The entire home is backed up through a backup gateway or transfer device. This is more convenient, but large loads like central air, electric ranges or well pumps can drain a battery quickly or exceed its output, so it usually takes more battery capacity or load management.
We'll walk through the loads you actually rely on during an outage and recommend the approach that fits your home and budget.
What Goes Into a Battery Installation
Load assessment and sizing
Service and panel review
Equipment location
Backup gateway or transfer equipment
Required safety features
Utility coordination
- Load assessment and sizing. Which circuits matter, how long they need to run, and what surge loads, such as pumps and compressors, will start up.
- Service and panel review. Whether your service and panel can accept the system, and whether an upgrade or energy management system is the right path.
- Equipment location. Battery placement that meets the manufacturer's clearances and code location limits.
- Backup gateway or transfer equipment. The device that separates your home from the grid during an outage.
- Required safety features. Disconnecting means, labeling, and, for one- and two-family homes, an exterior emergency shutdown control as required by current code.
- Utility coordination. Some battery configurations, especially those paired with solar or exporting to the grid, require utility interconnection approval.
- Permit, inspection, and commissioning. We set up the system and the app and walk you through how backup works.
Adding a Battery to Existing Solar
If you already have solar, a battery lets you keep using solar energy during an outage. Solar panels alone shut off when the grid goes down. Integration depends on your inverter and system design; we'll review your existing equipment and explain the options. (code review)
Battery vs. Generator vs. Vehicle Backup
| Home battery | Standby generator | Tesla Powershare (V2H) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel | None (stored energy) | Natural gas or propane | Vehicle battery |
| Noise | Quiet | Audible when running | Quiet |
| Long outages | Limited by capacity unless recharged by solar | Runs as long as fuel lasts | Limited by vehicle charge |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Routine maintenance needed | Minimal |
| Works when car is away | Yes | Yes | No |

Home Battery FAQs
How long will a battery run my house?
It depends on the battery capacity, how charged it is when the outage starts, and which loads are running. A critical-loads design can run much longer than a whole-home backup. We size the system around what you want covered.
Do I need solar to get a battery?
No. A battery can charge from the grid and hold that energy for outages. Solar lets it recharge during a long outage.
Will I need a panel upgrade?
Sometimes. It depends on your service size, panel condition, and the system design. Current code also allows some designs to use an energy management system instead of an upgrade.
Where can the battery be installed?
Garages, exterior walls, and some basements, depending on the manufacturer's requirements and local code rules. We'll recommend a location during the assessment.
Are there incentives for home batteries?
Federal, state or utility incentives may apply depending on timing and eligibility. Check current rules with a tax professional and your utility.
